During times of drug shortages, it is patients who suffer. Alternative drugs are used, modifications in treatments occur and costs increase. Between 2011 and 2014, the US Food and Drug Administration announced that there were 456 instances of drug shortages, ranging from sterile injectables, anti-infectivesand oncology treatments. Multiple factors contribute to drug shortages, including quality, manufacturing complexity, speed of regulation, decreased margins and inventory-related issues. Disease progression / worsening of symptoms.
Patients are impacted with:- Risk of adverse events, greater toxicity, development of drug resistance, exposure to falsified medicines, suboptimal treatment or therapeutic failures and emotional distress for patients and their families.

In many developed countries, pharmaceutical products in shortage often become political problems. Before the UK left the EU’s single market, many warned of the risk of medical supply shortages. MEPs adopted a draft report on 12 October to strengthen the EU’s pharmaceutical strategy, so every patient has reliable and timely access to medicines as shortages have been increasing since 2000.
MEPs called on the Commission, member states and EMA to develop:
“an early warning system for drug shortages, based on a transparent and centralised European digital platform”.
